Smartlist is a very popular query tool used by all Microsoft Dynamics GP customers worldwide. It has hundreds of useful SQL Views to allow GP users to filter and retrieve transactions from different tables in the GP database. BI360 now integrates to Smartlist views to provide an almost unlimited number of opportunities for business users to drill down from BI360 financial reports and into GP without having to create their own drill-down queries. For example, a department head can run a Profit & Loss report for his or her department, notice a budget variance on a row (e.g. Office Supplies) and with one click, drill down into the Accounts Payable transaction in GP and retrieve the vendor’s Purchase Order and see each line item on the purchase order. Not only does this provide instant answers to business questions without having to bother accountants and power users,  but it also does not require the user to have any knowledge of the Dynamics GP application, as both the drill down and the resulting view of the underlying transactions all happen from with the BI360 Excel-based report interface.
For a detailed example of the BI360 integration to Smartlist, please contact Solver and ask for the white paper “Integrating BI360 to a Smartlist view”.
The BI360 Drill To function is available for all BI360 ERP integrations, including Microsoft Dynamics AX, NAV, GP, SL, Sage MAS 500 and X3.  and Epicor Prophet 21. This document provides a detailed example of how to integrate a Smartlist SQL view with the powerful Drill To feature in BI360 (version 3.5 and later) for the purpose of setting up a drill down rule that let a user drill down from a Profit & Loss report and all the way into sub-ledger (here: Accounts Payable) transactions in the GP database.

Solver offers BI360 training classes built for our client and partner needs with one of our senior consultants. Whether it’s our standard two-day training class in our Los Angeles headquarters for novice users or on client site for a more customized training and workshop, Solver is there to assist. Benefits of the BI360 training classes include:

  • Understand the capabilities of the BI360 Suite.
  • Gain a deeper understanding of report writing.
  • Learn best practice usage of the BI360 applications.
  • Ability to create financial and operational reports by using BI360.
  • Build budget templates and set up the data warehouse.

Our two-day standard training class is an instructor led training that covers basic reporting design skills needed to create and maintain reports on BI360. The training is conducted with exercises specified in the training manual. We also have variations of our standard training that include budgeting and data warehousing.
Solver also offers BI360 workshops, which allows the client or partner to create reports with the assistance of the trainer. The workshop works best when it immediately follows the standard training class.
It is recommended that a projector is available to ensure that all attendees will be able to follow the training and that each attendee has their own workstation with BI360 installed.
For clients or partners who are unable to fit a full day of training into their busy work schedule, we offer remote BI360 training sessions. These training sessions can be broken down to multiple days allowing time to carry on with the workday.

A common frustration among many Finance and Accounting departments is the difficulty associated with modifying financial and operational reports. Users often resort to manually adjusting their reports in Excel to get them into their preferred format for distribution. This can become a very time consuming process when multiple drafts of the same report need to be prepared month after month.
My favorite aspect of BI360 is the familiar Excel-based environment, which allows users to
easily make these types of changes to existing reports. This means you only have to make each change one time for it to be incorporated into all future versions of that report. Changing fonts, highlighting rows, adding verbiage, or inserting in ratio calculations are no problem for Finance and Accounting users who are already well versed in Excel and often make these types of changes.
You can even take things a step further by adding conditional formatting to highlight variances and trends or by inserting a simple graph or pie chart for a quick visual snapshot of your receivables and payables. If you have a balance sheet item that might be classed as an asset or liability (depending on whether it has a credit or debit balance), use an Excel IF statement so it always shows up in the correct section of your balance sheet without manual manipulation.
With an understanding of Excel functionality, all of the above can be easily achieved and will deliver reports with strong visual impact that are fully formatted and ready for immediate distribution and use.

Multi Company P&L

We had full attendance for a Microsoft World Event hosted by Solver, Inc. in Gothenberg & Stockholm, Sweden. The seminar’s focus was on “SQL Server 2012 – Master Data Services a tool for managing master data“.
Most organizations recognize the problems with inconsistent supplier, customer and product records. Despite advanced BI solutions often lack the management of common structures, what is the core of the master data.
Thanks to Master Data Services in the new SQL 2012 ℱ, we control the master data and can rely on reports, cubes and thus we increase the reliability of the BI solution. The seminar is intended for people who work as a developer, architect or modeler of BI / DW solutions and to learn more about MDS in SQL 2012 SQL Server 2012 – Master Data Services a tool for managing master data

Many companies these days are planning to enhance their ERP system’s native reporting capabilities with additional Business Intelligence (BI) tools. Here are some things to consider for this evaluation process:

  1. The role of IT vs the BUSINESS USERS when it comes to enabling users to create reports:
    • Importance of user-friendly BI tools where IT does NOT have to design reports for the business users because the BI tools are USER FRIENDLY so business users can make their own reports
  2. The role of standard reports versus ad-hoc (quick drag and drop design) reporting capabilities in order to maximize quick access to ERP data and thus improve decision-making and pervasive BI.
  3. How less is more when it comes to the number of reporting tools that users need to access in order to pull financial reports, sub-ledger reports and ad-hoc reports from their ERP system:
    • The more report writers/tools that are required, the slower response time business users will have to take care of business questions and the more costly it is to manage all the BI tools and related training.
  4. The role (and importance) of LIVE reporting on the ERP database versus use of OLAP cubes or data warehouses on top of the ERP database:
    • Advantage of LIVE reporting is instant answer to business questions based on real time data and access (with good BI tools) to all fields in the ERP database
    • Advantage of data warehouse is often FASTER reporting, less stress on the ERP server, and ability to COMBINE ERP data with other data sources (= more KPIs, etc. now available).

LOS ANGELES, California, February 6, 2012 – Solver, Inc., the global leader in Business Intelligence for Microsoft Dynamics AX, GP, NAV, SL and other enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, today announced the release of version 3.5 of its BI360 software.

This software update provides organizations with the ability to further streamline reporting and budgeting processes and to easily implement a pre-configured Microsoft SQL Server data warehouse that captures information from diverse source systems.

BI360 version 3.5 is currently available for all supported integrations including Microsoft Dynamics AX, GP, NAV, SL, Sage MAS 500 and X3, Epicor Prophet21, and other ERP systems.

“We are excited to bring BI360 version 3.5 to our customers. It takes user-friendly Excel-based reporting and budgeting to the next level,” says Mike Applegate, VP of Development at Solver.

Solver’s BI360 suite represents a new generation of Business Intelligence tools that can be managed by the finance team as well as operational managers, without the need for IT skills. Live reporting directly on the ERP system’s database offers immediate ROI as users can start creating reports from the minute that BI360 has been installed. Drill down from financial statements to detail such as invoices and purchase orders, gives department heads and other business users the ultimate tool to answer their questions without ever having to ask accounting staff to run reports or to do lookups in the ERP system.
